Total private equity (PE) investment in India rose 67 percent in 2015 to $21billion from $12.5 billion a year ago, a report compiled by financial research firm VCCEdge revealed. The data excludes real estate and venture debt. The previous high was $18 billion, recorded in 2007.
While deal values of mergers and acquisitions (M&As) have seen a decline, equity capital markets remained supportive. 70 companies raised $2.3 billion in public offerings during 2015, up 2.4 times from what was raised through 64 deals in 2014.
Deal-making hit a record high with 1,375 deals recorded during 2015, the highest in the history of Indian private equity. The deal volume rose 48 percent compared to 934 deals in 2014.
Big-ticket deals ($100 million and above) constituted about 63 percent of the total private equity capital invested in 2015. There were 53 big-ticket deals with a total value of $13.2 billion, compared to 24 deals worth $5.8 billion in 2014.
Venture capital funding recorded the highest ever jump to cross a new milestone in 2015. During the year, a record 473 VC deals were registered, as against 307 deals recorded in 2014. Deal value also grew more than double to $5.4 billion from $2.3 billion in 2014.
Angel and seed investments grew 64 percent to $327 million from $200 million in 2014, with deal volume going up 82.6 percent to 650 deals from 356 deals in 2014, the research firm said.
Consumer discretionary, information technology, financials, industrials and utilities were the top five sectors to attract significant private investments during 2015.
