The total number of building approvals in Australia issued in January was down a seasonally adjusted 7.5 percent in January, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said on Tuesday – standing at 17,446.
That missed forecasts for a decline of 3.0 percent following the 9.2 percent increase in December.
On a yearly basis, building approvals tumbled 15.5 percent versus expectations for a fall of 8.5 percent following the 2.5 percent decline in the previous month.
The seasonally adjusted estimate for private sector houses dropped 6.0 percent in January following a rise of 6.9 percent in the previous month.
Private sector dwellings excluding houses fell 10.8 percent in January following a rise of 9.7 percent a month earlier.
